A CapCut template shows a black screen when the app cannot load or render part of the edit. Common causes are a slow connection while effects download, an outdated app, low storage, damaged cache files, or a clip the phone cannot process. Updating CapCut and replacing problem clips fixes most cases.
Where Does the Black Screen Appear?
Where you see the black screen points you to the cause. Find your situation in the table first:
| Where it happens | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Template preview, before you tap Use template | Slow internet or an outdated app | Switch to Wi-Fi and update CapCut |
| After you select your clips | A clip that won't load, such as a cloud-only, HDR or 4K file | Replace that clip |
| In one slot only | That specific clip or its format | Swap it for a different clip |
| In the exported video | An interrupted export or low storage | Free up space, keep the app open and export again |
| On every template | Damaged cache or app files | Clear the cache, restart, then reinstall if needed |
Some templates use black frames on purpose, for a text intro, a fade or a pause before the beat drops. Watch the original preview first. If the black part is in the creator's version too, it is part of the edit, not an error.
How to Fix a CapCut Template Black Screen
Work through these steps in order and test the template after each one. Stop as soon as it plays properly, since the later steps take longer.
- 1
Check the original preview
Play the template's preview on Templatess or in CapCut. If it has a black section too, that is part of the design, not an error.
- 2
Use a stable connection
Connect to Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal, then close and reopen the template so its music and effects download fully.
- 3
Update CapCut
Install the latest version from your app store. New templates can use effects that older versions cannot display.
- 4
Restart the app and your phone
Close CapCut completely, restart your phone and open the template again. This clears memory problems that cause blank previews.
- 5
Clear CapCut's cache
Use the clear cache option in CapCut's settings if your version has one, or on Android go to Settings, Apps, CapCut, Storage and tap Clear cache. Don't use Clear data or Clear storage, which can erase drafts.
- 6
Replace problem clips
Tap the black slot and replace the clip with a video saved on your phone, filmed at normal settings such as 1080p, instead of a cloud-only, HDR or 4K file.
- 7
Free up storage
Delete unused apps, old downloads or large videos so CapCut has room for template files and the export.
- 8
Export again at a lower setting
If the saved video is black, export again at 720p or 1080p and keep CapCut open on screen until it finishes.
Why Do My Clips Turn Black Inside a Template?
If the template plays fine but one of your own clips shows as black, the problem is that clip. These are the usual reasons:
- Cloud-only files Photos and videos stored in iCloud or Google Photos that are not downloaded to the phone may not load. Open them in your gallery first so they download, or save a copy to the device.
- HDR or high-efficiency video Many newer phones record HDR or HEVC video, which some devices struggle to process inside heavy effects. Try a clip recorded with HDR turned off, or at 1080p.
- Very large files A long 4K video used for a one-second slot makes the app work hard. Trim it first, or pick a shorter clip.
- Screen recordings and downloaded videos These can use unusual formats or frame rates. A clip filmed with your phone camera is the safest choice.
iPhone and Android Storage Settings to Check
Cloud backup settings are a hidden cause of black clips. On iPhone, if iCloud Photos is set to Optimize iPhone Storage, older photos and videos may be kept on the phone only as smaller versions, with the full file in iCloud. Open the clip in the Photos app and wait for it to load fully before adding it to a template.
On Android, using Free up space in Google Photos removes the copies on your phone after they are backed up. Those clips then have to download again before CapCut can use them. Download the clip back to your device first, then select it in the template.
Black Screen but the Music Still Plays
If you can hear the template's song but see only black, the audio has loaded and the video layer has not. This usually points to a heavy effect or a clip your phone is struggling to decode. Restart CapCut, replace the clip in the black section with a simple 1080p video, and close other apps to free up memory. If it happens only during export, try a lower resolution.
Fixing a CapCut Template Video Black Screen After Export
A video that looked fine in the preview but plays black after saving usually did not finish rendering properly.
- Keep CapCut open and your screen on during the export. Switching apps or locking the phone can interrupt it on some devices.
- Check your free storage. An export that runs out of space can leave an empty or broken file.
- Export again at a lower resolution. Some effects are heavy for older phones at high settings.
- Play the saved file in a different app, such as your gallery and then Google Photos. If it plays in one but not the other, the file is fine and the player is the problem.
Black Screen on Every Template?
If every template turns black, the issue is the app or your device, not the templates:
- Update your phone's system software as well as CapCut.
- Close other heavy apps, especially games, to free up memory.
- Reinstall CapCut, but back up any drafts you need first, since uninstalling can remove them.
- Use a genuine version of the app. Modded or "unlocked" versions are unstable and can be unsafe.
To update or reinstall on Android, our sister site's CapCut APK guide has notes on app versions. If templates will not load at all, with no preview and no Use template button, the cause may be availability rather than a display problem. CapCut is not offered in every country (it has been blocked in India since 2020, for example), and we don't share ways around that. Our CapCut template not showing guide covers those checks.
Does the Phone Matter?
Yes, to a degree. Templates with many layers, glow effects or 3D motion ask a lot from a phone's processor and memory. On older or budget phones, the preview may stutter or go black for a moment and then recover. Give it a few seconds, close other apps, and choose 720p when you export. If one heavy template keeps failing, a simpler template in the same style often works fine.
How to Avoid Black Screens Next Time
- Keep CapCut updated, especially when new trends appear.
- Film clips with your phone camera at 1080p and 30 or 60fps.
- Save clips to your phone before you open a template.
- Open new templates on Wi-Fi the first time, so the effects download fully.
- Keep a few gigabytes of storage free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my CapCut template showing a black screen?
Usually because CapCut could not load part of the edit, such as template effects on a slow connection, a clip stored only in the cloud, or features an outdated app doesn't support. Switch to Wi-Fi, update CapCut and reopen the template. If only one slot is black, replace that clip.
Why is my exported CapCut video black?
The export was probably interrupted or ran out of storage. Free up space, keep CapCut open with the screen on during export, and try a lower resolution such as 720p. If the file plays in one app but not another, the problem is the video player.
Does clearing the cache delete my CapCut projects?
Clearing the cache removes temporary files and should not touch your drafts or the videos in your gallery. Clearing app data or storage is different: on Android it resets the app and can erase drafts. Try the cache option first and back up important drafts before anything stronger.
Why does only one clip turn black in my template?
That clip is probably in a format the template can't process on your phone, such as HDR, 4K or a file stored only in the cloud. Tap the slot and replace it with a video saved on your phone at 1080p, or a new clip recorded with HDR turned off.
Is a black screen part of some templates?
Yes, sometimes. Creators use black frames for text intros, fades or a pause before the beat drops. Compare your edit with the template's original preview. If the black section appears there too, it is part of the design and your edit is working as intended.
Will reinstalling CapCut fix the black screen?
It often helps when every template turns black, because it replaces damaged app files. Back up any drafts you care about first, since reinstalling can remove them. Install CapCut from your phone's app store where it is available, and avoid modded versions.
Can a slow internet connection cause a black screen?
Yes. Templates download their music, effects and transitions when you open them. On a weak connection these can fail to load, which leaves the preview black. Switch to Wi-Fi or a stronger signal, then close and reopen the template.
